Reactivation of the airfield by the former Lufthansa of the German Democratic Republic. The airport is a commercial airport for domestic flights to the airports Berlin-Schönefeld, Leipzig, Erfurt and Dresden.

The first small aircraft of the general aviation was arrived at the airport in Barth. It comes from Hamburg.
27th of June in 1991
The company “Ostseeflughafen-Stralsund-Barth GmbH” was founded for the operations of an airport. General and business aviation are possible.
1991
Start of the first stage of construction, investment volume: DM 1 million. The country is providing the city of Barth with a subsidy of DM 900,000 for the expansion of the airport.
1992
The Hansestadt Stralsund receives funding of DM 7.8 million for the expansion of the regional infrastructure Ostseeflughafen Stralsund-Barth. Bundesliga football clubs use Barth airport to get to Rostock. Since 1992 charter flights have been made to the region
1993
Start of the second stage of construction. New construction of the runway: 1,720 m x 30 m, enlargement of the apron, construction of the electronic navigation systems, renewal of the runway and apron lighting. Inauguration of the new runway by Minister Dr. Angela Merkel.

Application for funding for further modernization of the airport.

The Nordvorpommern district as a recipient of funding receives a legally binding commitment to the provision of EUR 2.7 million for the III. Expansion stage.
